Get Community to Get out of Debt

February 6, 2017 | 1 Comment

Everyone that has ever been on the road of becoming debt free, knows that you have to be “weird,” like Dave Ramsey says. There are a lot of sacrifices you and your family must make in order to live a frugal lifestyle so you can throw every penny toward your debt. We’ve all experienced that moment when you tell a family member or friend of your family’s plan. They might not understand and even discourage you from pursuing such a weird lifestyle, but this is why having a community is so important.

Forums and other groups are so popular and these are the places for you! You can find limitless financial forums to help you get out of debt. They even have specific forums like early retirement and savings forums too!

It’s vital to your success in becoming debt free that you surround yourself with people that are in the same boat as you or have gone down the same path as you to keep you motivated. With today’s technology, this is so easy to do.

Here are so reasons that community will help you succeed:

A large number of people at your fingertips

With joining difference communities online that all share a similar goal you have a large number of people to help you and keep you motivated throughout the whole process.

Hear motivating and fantastic stories

I absolutely love hearing how people get out of debt. It may a couple that paid off $200,000 in debt in less than 7 years. Or maybe the family of 7 that paid off $137,000 of debt in 4 years. When you are feeling down and like the rough path ahead is too much to handle these stories of regular people doing amazing things is just what you need to hear. They are all true inspirations to us all.

Engage in conversation with other people and families just like you

The path of becoming debt free can be a lonely one since many people are not able to go to dinner with their friends and no one quite understands the circumstances of your financial journey. Engaging in conversation with others that understand where you have been and where you are going is unlike any other. Whether you are solely discussing financial information or even personal, it’s so nice to know that they are always there for you.

No strings attached

Many times when you seek advice or help others they want you to purchase a product or class. When you go on these forums it is a place where you know there are no strings attached. Many times when we succeed in something so unique like becoming debt free people are so interested and want to know everything you did to get there. People are genuinely there to help you reach your goals and nothing is really expected in return.

Unlimited resources

Have a question about how to cut your grocery bill in half? Maybe you need some guidance on how to prepare for unexpected things that keep wrecking your monthly budget. This is the place for you! Submitting a question or problem or forum will get you so many answers.

Here are some of my favorite places you can go to get support for becoming debt free.

  • Frugal Village
  • Our Debt Free Family Facebook Group
  • Baby Center Community
  • Saving Advice Forum
  • Bogleheads Forums

I hope these forums will help you as much as they helped me. “If you want to go quickly, go alone. If you want to go far go together.” – Africa Proverb

What about you? Are you a part of any groups or finance forums? If so, please comment below with which ones you like and what you enjoy most about being part of a community.

Five Steps To Debt Freedom

Here are five simple guidlines that will help you pay off debt.

1) Get an emergency fund so you don’t take on debt when something comes up.

2) List your debts. This way you know where you stand.

3) Use the debt snowball. Pay your debts from smallest to largest, or most expensive to least expensive.

4) Avoid new debt. No new credit cards or loans. Period.

5) Go all cash. After everything is paid off, switch to all cash.
